Epson Stylus Photo R320 photo printer

Date Published: 2/21/08

The Epson R320 is primarily a photo printer, but it can also print standard personal or business documents. Unlike most inkjets, the R320 can print directly on CD and DVD.

In addition to printing from desktop and laptop computers, the R320 can print directly from PictBridge-compatible digital cameras and camcorders. It has slots for the most common memory card types, including Compact Flash Type I and II, Smart Media, Memory Stick, MagicGate Memory Stick, xD-Picture Card, IBM Microdrive, and SD/MultimediaCard. A small, built-in color monitor allows you to preview photos before printing.

You might expect all this versatility to come at the expense of quality, but the R320 delivers above-average output of both standard documents and photos. A six-color, dye-based ink system delivers vivid, true-to-life colors. The R320 uses six separate ink cartridges, so you can replace individual colors as needed.

Print speeds are better than average for photos and about average for standard documents. There is really only one slight catch, but it's not a fault of the printer itself. The R320 can only print on inkjet-printable CD and DVD, which means you're out of luck if you were hoping to finally put fancy labels on all those anonymous CD and DVD scattered around the house.

The paper tray can hold up to 120 sheets of plain paper, up to 10 envelopes, up to 20 sheets of photo paper, or one transparency. The R320 can print borderless 4X6-inch, 5X7-inch, and 8X10-inch photos, as well as banners up to 44 inches in length.

Available options include a Bluetooth Photo Print Adapter ($69) for printing from cell phones and other mobile devices, and the EpsonNet 802.11g Wireless External Print Server. The package includes six ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, and light magenta), a CD tray, and a CD-ROM with printer drivers, Epson PrintCD software for printing on CD and DVD, and printer documentation. The package does not include any printer cables.

If your documents need to be nicely printed for presentations, and you have various needs in a printer, this may be your unit. Quality and versatility are the hallmarks of the Epson R320 photo printer.

Pro: Extremely versatile. Above-average output quality. Can print directly on CD and DVD. Accepts most common memory card types. Can print directly from PictBridge-compatible digital cameras and camcorders.
Con: Needs a fair amount of desktop space because of the pullout paper trays. Preview screen is very small. Can only print on inkjet-printable CD and DVD.
