Elna Serger 683
Date Published: 9/29/08
Elna's entry-level Serger 683 is a fine, reliable model for those considering adding a serger to their lineup of sewing equipment.
The Serger 683 features 4/3 thread serging, which means it can sew an overlock seam with three or four threads. It also has a differential feed system, which is one of the most important features to consider. This feature holds various thicknesses of fabrics firmly and helps to ensure successful results for a variety of projects. Models without this feature are prone to frustrating slippage, unwanted movement of the upper fabric, and other generally frustrating problems.
Also included is the popular rolled hem device, which makes it possible to produce a fine rolled hem for napkins or the fine fabrics used in blouses or lightweight dressy skirts.
Another especially convenient feature is the adjustable cutting device. This feature allows you to adjust the knife blade so seams can be cut to the exact width you desire. As easy to thread as it is to operate, this model has color-coded threading routes and a self-threader for that tricky lower looper.
Versatile and well built, the Elna Serger 683 offers all the most-used settings for a variety of clothing finishes and decorative tasks.
Pro: solid, accurate reliable serger with all the most used basic features
Con: more expensive than the discount brands
