Desirable Future: Consumer Electronics in Tomorrow\'s World (Science Museum TechKnow Series)
With the pace of current development in consumer electronics, it is tempting to picture a future in which everyone carries miniature gadgets whose batteries never run out, and which inform, entertain, translate, communicate, memorise and organise. Is this a realistic picture… or is the future of consumer electronics threatened by factors such as climate change, global politics and, of course, people's continued willingness to 'buy into' the modern world? In Desirable Future? Jack Challoner takes a thought-provoking look at this powerful industry. He describes the technologies - such as new power supplies, increased miniaturisation, and convergence - that will drive it forward, and looks at the role that artificial intelligence and speech recognition will play. He asks whether the current rate of progress is sustainable, or whether the industry is heading for a state of collapse... He raises some fascinating issues along the way, such as:  Will you ever be able to have intelligent conversations with your gadgets? Will we have to keep buying new formats for films and music? How many obsolete mobile phones and chargers do you have? Can you only afford new gadgets when they're already going out of fashion? Is built-in obsolescence a commercial strategy or a necessity? If you're someone who can't make it through the day without your mobile phone, PDA, MP3 player etc, then this book will give you some food for thought about how we became such a gadget-obsessed society and what the future holds…About the authorJack has written nearly 30 books for children, teenagers and adults. In addition he often acts as consultant science editor for books, magazines, science activity packs and CD-ROMs. He also presents live science shows in museums, schools and libraries.http://www.explaining-science.co.uk/

Electronic Hearth: Creating an American Television Culture
We all talk about the "tube" or "box," as if television were simply another appliance like the refrigerator or toaster oven. But Cecilia Tichi argues that TV is actually an environment--a pervasive screen-world that saturates almost every aspect of modern life. In Electronic Hearth, she looks at how that environment evolved, and how it, in turn, has shaped the American experience. Tichi explores almost fifty years of writing about television--in novels, cartoons, journalism, advertising, and critical books and articles--to define the role of television in the American consciousness. She examines early TV advertising to show how the industry tried to position the new device as not just a gadget but a prestigious new piece of furniture, a highly prized addition to the home. The television set, she writes, has emerged as a new electronic hearth--the center of family activity. John Updike described this "primitive appeal of the hearth" in Roger's Version: "Television is--its irresistible charm--a fire. Entering an empty room, we turn it on, and a talking face flares into being." Sitting in front of the TV, Americans exist in a safety zone, free from the hostility and violence of the outside world. She also discusses long-standing suspicions of TV viewing: its often solitary, almost autoerotic character, its supposed numbing of the minds and imagination of children, and assertions that watching television drugs the minds of Americans. Television has been seen as treacherous territory for public figures, from generals to presidents, where satire and broadcast journalism often deflate their authority. And the print culture of journalism and book publishing has waged a decades-long war of survival against it--only to see new TV generations embrace both the box and the book as a part of their cultural world. In today's culture, she writes, we have become "teleconscious"--seeing, for example, real life being certified through television ("as seen on TV"), and television constantly ratified through its universal presence in art, movies, music, comic strips, fabric prints, and even references to TV on TV. Ranging far beyond the bounds of the broadcast industry, Tichi provides a history of contemporary American culture, a culture defined by the television environment. Intensively researched and insightfully written, The Electronic Hearth offers a new understanding of a critical, but much-maligned, aspect of modern life.

The Third Element: A Brief History of Electronics
The Third Element gives a glimpse of the history of electronics from its beginnings in Biblical times up to the computer era, about 1980. Without burdening the reader with technical details, it gives an idea of some of the problems that the pioneers of this industry faced and how many of our marvelous electronic gadgets came into being. Electronics is just a further development of the electrical sciences; this book describes the contributions made by the earliest experimenters, leading up to the Lee de Forest's big moment of discovery of the triode vacuum tube, the cornerstone of the industry. The book stops short of the software aspects of modern electronics, but covers in some detail a few of the historic developments that have brought this huge industry to life. It brings out some interesting trivia - did you know: -there was no transcontinental telephone service until about 1915 when the electronic amplifier appeared? -about the Idaho farm boy who was judged to have invented modern television, taking RCA to court and winning? -two American inventors patented the telephone on the same day in 1876? Here is a fascinating look at the industry that probably has had a greater effect on our lives than any other scientific discovery in history. Read and enjoy it..
