The GeoSafari Field Explorer Kit 5261 by Educational Insights is a fun way to turn a backyard walk into a nature expedition. Designed for children ages five and older, the GeoSafari Field Explorer Kit includes binoculars, a magnifying bug viewer, a Swiss Army-style multi-tool and a bug identification guide.
We were pleasantly surprised at the magnifying power of the binoculars. Although the binoculars have plenty of kid-friendly features, such as a breakaway neck strap, non-slip foam grip and protective eyecups, the 4X magnification lenses are decidedly powerful.
Likewise, the GeoSafari Field Explorer Kit's "backyard explorer" tool is full of feature-rich fun. It includes a signal mirror, shovel, soil magnet, compass, magnifying lens, 2-inch plastic serrated tool, tweezers and a plastic "bug observation" slide. We did notice the compass was not always accurate, however.
A plastic cup with air holes and a magnifying lid allows kids to get a close look at eight-legged creatures. The bottom of the cup even has a sizing grid for young scientists. Plus, an insect field guide helps kids easily identify various bug species and includes helpful information about spiders, caterpillars, butterflies, ants, grasshoppers and more.
Younger children may need a bit of direction to find, temporarily capture and examine bugs, but all of our pint-size testers relished the opportunity to explore outdoor spaces in search of tiny creatures. Even if bugs are not your child's "thing," it's still fun to use the binoculars and the multi-tool, as well as put other small objects in the magnifying cup -- such flowers, rocks or other outdoor items.
Parents will appreciate the sturdiness of the items in this set; the items can stand up to hours of kid-centered outdoor play. Overall, this is a fun, useful and reasonably priced educational toy that is ideal for outdoor play.
Pros: Promotes outdoor play and scientific exploration, durable and easy to use
Cons: Compass may not be accurate
