Echo ProLite PB-260L blower

Date Published: 6/5/08

The Echo ProLite PB-260L is a commercially rated gas backpack blower, but it is light enough and economical enough for homeowners who need the kind of clean-up power this unit can deliver.

At just 14.5 pounds, and less than $270, the PB-260L is one of the lightest and least expensive backpack blowers around. Maximum air speed is 155 mph, which is respectable but not super-powerful; air volume -- or cfm rating -- is excellent at 427 cfm. An electronic ignition allows quick, easy starting. The 25.4 cc gas engine is backed by an exceptional 5-year consumer warranty from Echo. No vacuum feature is included on this model.

While most electric models come fully assembled, the Echo PB-260L does require some assembly. Once up and running, the PB-260-L rests comfortably on your back thanks to the padded backrest and wide, adjustable padded shoulder straps. We liked the complete portability of this unit; even though it weighed more than 14 pounds (many backpack models weigh closer to 20 pounds), it was less tiring to carry than some handheld models, and this is primarily due to the backpack design. The PB-260L started easily, and we were surprised at how little vibration the unit generated. In addition, we found the blowing power adequate for most tasks, moving everything from wet leaves to small rocks. The unit feels solid and well made.

The Echo PB-260L operates at 65 decibels, which is a low rating for any gas blower. The adjustable left hip-mounted variable-speed throttle assembly includes cruise control. A see-through fuel tank lets you check fuel level at a glance; it uses the typical 50:1 gas-to-oil mixture. The muffler shroud directs heat away from your body.

If you're looking for a dependable, commercially rated blower-only model with easy portability and a great warranty, the Echo PB-260L offers a good choice at a reasonable price.

Pros: Good warranty, light weight, little vibration, comfortable shoulder straps
Cons: Moderate power, no vacuuming or shredding capability

Warranty
2 years, commercial use; 5 years, residential use
