Dyson Root 6 DC16 Handheld Vacuum
Date Published: 12/4/07
The Dyson Root 6 DC16 is by far the most powerful handheld cordless vacuum we've tested. It picks up debris with ease, including larger particles such as cereal, sand and other debris. In fact, it performs like we think all handheld vacuums should -- but often don't. That's why we were so pleasantly surprised by the suction power of the Root 6. It uses patented Dyson Cyclone technology, which translates into constant suction that pulls debris into a view-through collection canister. The canister is easy to open and a breeze to empty.
The Dyson Root 6 DC16 features a sleek design with most working parts located at the rear of the vacuum. We initially worried this might make the Root 6 unbalanced, but this was not the case. It is easy to hold and lightweight. We could use the Root 6 to thoroughly clean an area without experiencing any hand cramping or aching. Ergonomical? Yes.
The initial purchase includes a battery charger, and we discovered the Dyson Root 6 charges much faster than other models. This is a very convenient feature. Plus, the Root 6 has LED lights to indicate remaining battery life, so there is never a question about whether the battery needs to be charged. Our only complaint is that the battery only lasts about 6 minutes. However, given the Dyson's efficient performance, we find that we seldom need more than 5 minutes to complete a cleaning task. If it's a mess that will take longer, we will probably need to resort to an upright vacuum for faster clean up anyway.
The Dyson Root 6 comes with a crevice tool and a combination accessory tool that can be used to suction larger items. Overall, the Dyson Root 6 DC16 earns our highest marks for performance and ease of use. It does cost more than many of its competitors, but it's a decent trade-off for a cordless vacuum that actually works.
