Dynex DX-M200 PCMCIA Data-Fax Modem

Date Published: 11/28/06

If you have a desktop computer without a modem, you can simply pick up a PCI modem and install it into an open slot on the motherboard. But what if you've got an older portable computer from the days before a modem was standard, or what if the built-in modem in your notebook has failed and you're still relying on dial-up access?

The Dynex DX-M200 PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem is a PC card modem that gives 56K dial-up internet capabilities to any portable computer with a PC card slot. You can also use it with tablet PCs or any device that features a PCMCIA slot.

The DX-M200 slides into the PC card slot, so installation is a breeze. Newer operating systems will automatically detect the modem and install the correct driver. If you've got a Windows 98 portable computer, Dynex includes a floppy disk with the driver, or you can download it from their website if your notebook doesn't have a floppy drive. The installation guide walks you through the basic process for a variety of operating systems.

Once you have it loaded into your portable computer, plug in the included adapter to make the PC card accessible to an RJ-11 telephone line. Dynex includes a telephone cable with the modem, although you probably have some cords lying around. After you connect the adapter to the phone line, simply plug it into a wall jack and dial your internet service provider.

The MSRP of the DX-M200 is $82, although some vendors are selling it for about half that price. You can also pick up a refurbished version for an excellent price if you don't insist on a brand-new one. Dynex offers a 1-year limited warranty, so you have some modest coverage in the event of a problem.

Dial-up modems of any kind are swiftly becoming legacy products, but if you need one for an older portable computer or to replace a defunct modem on a newer notebook, the Dynex DX-M200 PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem is an option.
