Digital-to-Analog Converter Boxes: Tune in to Digital TV

Date Published: 08/25/2008

Digital-to-Analog (DTA) converter boxes will be necessary to view basic channels (non-cable or satellite stations) on televisions with analog tuners. A DTA converter is essentially a box that receives digital signals and broadcasts them through to a connected analog tuner. Since these signals are being altered, they will not necessarily be as clear as regular digital signals. Some DTA converters also include an analog pass-through which will allow any remaining channels broadcasting in analog to be viewed.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has set up a program to help consumers handle the costs of purchasing a DTA converter box -- the TV Converter Box Coupon Program. Each household can register for up to two $40 coupons; however, only one coupon may be used to purchase one converter box.

A list of eligible DTA converters can be found here. The NTIA provides the names of all converters currently on the market, as well as those that are not yet available. Red asterisks denote products approved by the NTIA and can be purchased using the coupons. Coupons became available on January 1, 2008 and are available through registration until March 31, 2009. Due to the massive amount of registrations, the coupons are mailed in batches through the United States Postal Service. For example, if a coupon is registered for between August 9 and 15, 2008, it will not be mailed until September 5, 2008. Be aware, however, that coupons expire 90 days after they have been mailed.

EnergyStar, a government program that promotes and approves products that are energy efficient, has included DTA converter boxes in its list of products.  The converter boxes approved by EnergyStar run on less watts and go into sleep mode after a given period of time. Many of these converters are also included in the NTIA coupons program's list of eligible converters.

Keep in mind; you do not necessarily have to buy a NTIA approved converter box. There are other boxes available. In buying a different converter though, you waive your option of using a coupon.

Where to Buy a DTA Converter?

There are several stores which may carry DTA converters. Stock is not guaranteed, so it may be best to call a store before heading out. RadioShack, Target, Best Buy and Walmart are all listed as retailers who carry converters. Some converter manufacturers include RCA, Magnavox, Insignia and Apex. Unfortunately, if you are looking to buy one on-line, chances are you will find you cannot. Many retailers list DTA converters as available "In Store Only." Also, many models have similar names. When buying a converter with an issued coupon, make sure it matches the list of eligible converters.

The Federal Trade Commission has several pointers regarding the coupons and boxes. There is no need to ever give personal information or money for a converter box coupon. They are issued by the government for free. Anything else is a scam. Also, it is important to know that if you return a converter box, you cannot get the coupon's value back. It may be helpful to ask the retailer about the box's warranty and return policy before purchase.  More information can be found here on the Federal Trade Commission's site.
