Digital Lifestyle Outfitters HomeDock Deluxe for iPod
Date Published: 9/5/06
With Digital Lifestyle Outfitters' HomeDock Deluxe, you can connect your iPod to your stereo receiver and TV and control everything via a remote. Unlike the standard HomeDock, the Deluxe version lets you navigate through your playlists via the TV screen, although to some users, this may not be worth the extra $50. You can also connect the HomeDock Deluxe to a set of powered speakers, although its On-Screen Navigation feature won't be available.
The dock can hold just about any dockable iPod, including the iPod video, mini and nano. Unlike most other docking systems, the connector on the dock is raised, so you can usually place an iPod into the dock without removing its protective case. The backrest is adjustable to securely fit any model of iPod. When not in use, the remote rests in its own slot in the dock.
The HomeDock Deluxe has a black and silver color scheme that blends in well with most stereo systems. It includes a charging system, so you can recharge the iPod via the dock's power or a USB connection. You can also use the USB connection to sync your music, photo, or video files with a desktop or laptop computer.
There are two modes of operation, iPod Mode and On-Screen Navigation Mode. In iPod Mode, you can view photos and videos on your iPod or play music through your stereo's speakers. In On-Screen Navigation Mode, you can use the TV screen to make selections from your playlists, as well as view information for the song currently playing. You can also view photos and videos on the TV screen, but you must use your iPod to control them. On-Screen Navigation Mode does not allow you to navigate through photos or videos, but this is a limitation of current iPods and not the HomeDock Deluxe.
The remote uses an infrared signal, so it requires a direct line of sight to the HomeDock Deluxe to function properly.
Pros: Excellent sound quality, includes composite and S-video outputs for sending video to a TV screen, USB port for syncing files with a desktop or laptop computer, can recharge iPod directly or via the USB port
Cons: Expensive, questionable whether the HomeDock Deluxe offers enough additional features over the standard model to be worth the difference in price
