The DeWalt DW618PK router kit includes a 12-amp, 2.25-hp motor pack and two bases, fixed and plunge. We found it to have plenty of power for making various kits, including dadoes for shelves in oak. Despite the big power, the unit's electronic soft start, variable speeds (8,000 to 24,000 rpm), and electronic feedback technology (maintains speed even as load changes) make for good control and fewer mistakes. A spindle lock button on the motor allows for single-wrench bit removal.

The fixed base has a large, easy-to-adjust ring for rough bit height adjustments. The fine-depth-adjustment ring provides 1/64-inch increments. The plunge base has particularly effective (95 percent), through-the-column dust collection. The plunge lever and switch is conveniently located for good control. A detachable power cord makes for easy serviceability and all the motor to be used for all bases.

The unit comes with a centering tool for ensuring concentric placement of the sub-base. It also comes with 1/4- and 1/2-inch collets, a wrench, a vacuum adaptor, and a carrying case.
