Denon S-101 Compact Stereo System With DVD Playback
Date Published: 8/22/06
Why limit your listening choices to CD and radio, when a compact stereo system such as Denon's S-101 lets you listen and watch DVD as well? The S-101 can play CD, DVD-Video and DVD-Audio (two-channel playback only), as well as MP3 and WMA files burned to disc. The S-101 also has a dedicated input for portable digital audio players such as iPods, and it offers control capabilities through its comprehensive remote. To make it easier to navigate through DVD-Video menus and MP3 folders, the S-101 should ideally be connected to a television.
The S-101 offers progressive scan playback of DVD-Video via its component video output. Video playback is adequate, assisted by a 54MHz/10-bit converter. There is internal processing for Dolby Digital and DTS, and these multichannel soundtracks are down-converted to two-channel stereo. To simulate a multichannel effect, the S-101 has Dolby Virtual Speaker that creates a surround feel using just the two stereo speakers.
The S-101's amplifier provides 50 watts into two channels, and the included 8-inch powered subwoofer has its own amplifier supplying it with 100 watts of power. Each stereo speaker uses a 4-inch woofer and a 1-inch tweeter. For a compact stereo system with DVD-Video playback, Denon's S-101 is a good choice.
Pros: DVD and MP3 playback, includes powered subwoofer, can link to and control portable digital audio players
