The Denon DVD-3910 sits in the middle of Denon's DVD/SACD universal player lineup. However, considering its abilities, the DVD-3910 could ably serve as a flagship player for a number of other manufacturers.

This single-disc, progressive scan player features digital bass management with a selectable filter for DVD-Video, DVD-Audio and SACD playback. The DVD-3910 has high-quality 192kHz/24-bit converters, with built-in processing for Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound. In addition to DVD-Video and the high-resolution audio formats, it is compatible with DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW and MP3, WMA and JPEG files burned to recordable CD and DVD.

Video performance is excellent, with dual 216MHz/12-bit digital-to-analog converters. It also has noise-shaping technology to improve the details of DVD movies, and video images can be up-converted to high-definition resolutions. The DVD-3910 uses DCDi decoding by Faroudja, a leader in this technology. It has an 8MB memory buffer to smooth out transitions during DVD playback, and other useful features include zoom, noise reduction, picture mode adjustments and multiple aspect ratio modes.

The DVD-3910 has a number of advanced connection options, including HDMI, DVI, IEEE 1394 and the proprietary Denon Link for digitally connecting multiple Denon components. It also sports the usual composite video, component video and S-video outputs. There are coaxial and optical digital audio outputs, as well as a set of analog audio outputs for DVD-Audio and SACD.

The Denon DVD-3910 universal player can do just about everything, and it would be a fine addition to a mid- to high-end home theater system.
