Denon AVR-588
Date Published: 2/8/08While there are some great entry level A/V receivers out there, if you're looking for a receiver that really rewards you for spending a little more, the Denon AVR-588 should be on your list to check out. This receiver offers an impressive list of high quality video and audio technologies, features, plenty of power, and HDMI switching. This receiver represents a great bang for the buck for those who want more than an entry level model.
The list of video features on the AVR-588 is anchored by its HDMI version 1.3a switching (two inputs/one output) that allows 1080p pass through. The HDMI pass through supports up to 36-bit deep color and xvYCC broader color space for your high definition pictures. We should point out there is no audio support via the HDMI inputs--digital audio from the sources coaxial or optical out puts should be run to the receiver separately. There are three component video inputs (and one output), three S-video inputs, and four composite video inputs. Any way you slice it this receiver has the connectivity options to meet most home theater enthusiasts' needs.
The audio features are impressive on this receiver. It decodes Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx (cinema, movie and game modes), DTS, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24. For multi-channel music lovers, 7.1 channel SACD is within your grasp, as well as featuring DVD-Audio inputs--and if digital satellite music is more your cup of tea, the AVR-588 is also XM ready. Denon offers an optional iPod dock for audio, photo and video playback. Denon's new compressed audio restorer allows you to enjoy the music files off your iPod with a higher frequency range and deeper bass, which operates in either a 7.1 channel mode or in a 5.1 channel mode and a second zone. Either mode that works for you, all seven channels are powered with an identical 75 watts of power. During our sound tests, we found created very realistic surround sound effects on all test disks with more than enough power to wake the neighbors.
In short, the things that elevate this above your average entry-level receiver are its flexibility and a high quality power source for each of its seven channels. The only negative we found with this unit was the remote control, which was a little confusing with its controls on front and back of the unit.
Pros: HDMI 1.3a video switching with deep color support, 1080p pass through
Cons: Remote layout confusing, manual not very user friendly
