Delta 12-1/2-Inch Portable Planer TP305
Date Published: 6/9/06
The Delta 12-1/2-Inch Portable Planer TP305 allows amateur woodworkers to plane rough-cut lumber from as thin as 3/16 inch to as thick as 6 inches.
The maximum depth of cut for a single pass is 3/16 inch for soft and hardwood boards that are 7 inches wide or less. It's of course less for wider softwood boards and still less for wider hardwoods.
The unit is powered by a 15-amp, 120-volt motor that develops a no-load speed of 8,000 rpm. With the double knife, that translates to 16,000 cpms (cuts per minute). The 26.2 feet/minute feed rate for softer woods is slower than heavier-duty machines, but adequate for the hobbyist.
Knifes are easier to change and the steel cutterhead runs on ball bearings for smooth, trouble-free operation. Raising and lowering the head assembly is smooth; one revolution of the crank raises or lowers the cutterhead by a little more than 1/16 inch. A convenient handle for carrying the planer doubles as a stock transfer bar. Just lay lock boards that require multiple passes on it and pull the board back to the infeed side of the machine.
This unit can be set up in less than 30 minutes, which includes leveling the extension tables, attaching the cutterhead guard, and bolting the unit to a sturdy workbench or table.
The Delta TP305 is ideal for the serious home woodworking enthusiast who occasionally needs to size and to dress surfaces prior to building furniture and cabinetry.
