Delphi XpressRC

Date Published: 6/3/08

Delphi wanted to make an XM radio receiver with full-color capability to enliven the experiences of satellite radio customers. The super-thin, ultra-portable XpressRC is unlike anything most XM subscribers have seen. It boasts a full color LCD screen and plenty of room to display some artwork for the station and artist, as well as a split screen functionality for showing real-time programming information, favorites, and more.

The XpressRC allows you to pause music for up to 60 minutes, thanks to an internal buffer. This means that even though XM radio is "live" radio, you won't miss your favorite song as you stop to fill up your gas tank or answer a phone call. The device stores up to 10 favorite channels, each of which is directly accessible from the front panel thanks to 10 hard buttons. This XM receiver is all about convenience, and it really did perform when predicting how we'd like to listen to music. For example, the TuneSelect function can set an "alert" for your favorite artist or song. To activate it, simply press and hold the XM button for about two seconds. You can then select whether you are storing the song or artist. When the artist or sing is played on any XM channel the system will then pop up a message and a tone to let you know. Hitting the XM button jumps you to that channel. It's pretty cool, and shows that Delphi understands the whole concept of User Choice and flexibility.

Another feature we liked was the ability to select our favorite team and have the system give you stats and scores. It will also alert you--just like the TuneSelect--to when your favorite teams are playing. You can also store a team by pressing the XM button for a couple seconds while listening to a team on the current channel.

Delphi has taken XM receivers to a new level with the XpressRC. This is not your father's XM radio; it's new, fresh, colorful and has a host of convenience features that just might convince people to make the move over to digital radio subscriptions. For those used to the functionality and convenience of iPod, this product finally hits home and makes for a great portable, dockable entertainment platform you can use in the home or take with you in the car.

Pros: Color LCD screen, super thin, conveniently portable, 60 minute buffer, TuneSelect for music and sports
Cons: Must be docked with external antenna to work
