Dell W4200HD 42-inch plasma HDTV
Date Published: 10/26/07
The Dell W4200HD is a 42-inch plasma TV with PC connectivity, dual tuners for standard and high-definition reception, and detachable speakers and stand for maximum flexibility. The black-framed flat-screen monitor can be mounted on the wall using a separately available bracket, and the speakers have their own removable stands. Controls are placed along the lower edge, and a set of audio/video/S-video inputs are conveniently located on the side of the monitor for the quick connection of an occasional component such as a camcorder.
With an impressive contrast ratio of 2,300:1 and a high-definition 1,024X768 display, the W4200HD has a lot going for it. The wide-format screen boasts brightness of 420 cd/m2, which will stand up to bright room conditions. The viewing angle is 80 degrees horizontally and vertically, which is less than many competing models but acceptable given the width of the screen. Picture-in-picture functions can be used with any content, including PC and HD sources. The detachable stereo speakers are rated at 20 watts each, and they can be used to simulate surround sound.
In addition to the side-panel inputs, the W4200HD has numerous inputs located on the rear panel, with two audio/video inputs, two S-video inputs, two component video inputs, one RF input, HDMI and DVI interfaces, a VGA input for connecting a PC, and a subwoofer output. The universal remote control matches the TV and has an unusually simple layout, in part because the inputs must all be reached through a single button. Some of the buttons are backlit in blue, making them easier to find in the dark.
