Dell W3707C 37-Inch LCD HDTV
Date Published: 10/26/07
You may not think of a computer company when shopping for a flat-panel television, but Dell offers a very capable LCD set with its 37-inch W3707C. This attractive and innovative HDTV really packs in the features, and its input/output selection is head and shoulders above even much more expensive LCD models. While the on-screen menu system and remote control make operation a bit of a pain, the W3707C is still a good value for a midsize LCD HDTV.
The W3707C has a native resolution of 1,366X768, and HD and other signals are adapted to fit the pixel count. Images generally appear clear and bright, although blacks don't look very black. However, this is a limitation of the technology and not the W3707C, as black levels are a problem for most LCD flat-panel TVs.
The feature list is long and comprehensive. There are a host of PIP and split-screen options, including a format Dell calls picture-by-picture (PBP). In addition, the dual-tuner W3707C allows you to view HD content in a split-screen or inset window setup without the need for a second video source. Other convenience features include V-chip controls and channel locks, as well as memory for the video settings for each input. Unfortunately, the W3707C lacks a CableCARD slot or QAM tuner, so it isn't digital cable-ready.
The W3707C comes with detachable speakers and a removable pedestal stand, so you will have a wide variety of placement and configuration options. The speakers are rated at 15 watts per channel, which is a step above many similar-size LCD and plasma TVs. In addition, the speakers can be placed adjacent to the screen or widely separated, or you can even disconnect them completely and route the audio to a separate home theater system.
One drawback is the on-screen menu system, which is oriented across the bottom of the screen. Menu options appear in vertical lists that require you to scroll up, which may prove counterintuitive after years of menus on components and computers that scroll down. Of course, practice will resolve this issue in time.
The selection of inputs and outputs on the W3707C is phenomenal. The rear panel is home to a pair of HDMI inputs, a pair of RF inputs (one digital, one analog), a VGA PC input with audio, two HD component video inputs, three S-video inputs and coaxial and optical digital audio outputs, among others.
Despite some minor negatives, the Dell W3707C is a compelling 37-inch LCD HDTV that offers good performance combined with a long feature list and excellent connectivity.
Pros: Great connection selection, strong audio system with detachable speakers, dual-tuner PIP
Cons: Unimpressive black levels, annoying on-screen menu system, not digital cable-ready
