Dell Axim X30

Date Published: 7/15/04

The Dell Axim X30 is a Pocket PC handheld that runs the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition operating system. Although it looks virtually identical to the Dell Axim X3, it packs a lot more power with faster processors, integrated WiFi, and Bluetooth. If you liked the ergonomics and styling of the X3, you’ll really like the X30.

As with the X3, Dell actually has three versions of the X30. Although they all look superficially the same, they have different features and pricing. The bottom of the X30 line has a 312MHz processor, 32MB of RAM, and no wireless capabilities. The middle of the road X30 has the 312MHz processor, but has 64MB of RAM and includes Bluetooth and WiFi. The top of the line has a 624MHz processor and 64MB of RAM, along with Bluetooth and WiFi.

The most notable new feature in the latest version of Windows Mobile is that you now can actually change the orientation of the screen from portrait to landscape. Older applications might not work correctly in landscape orientation, but most applications are being updated to work with the new OS. The X30 comes with a standard array of Windows Mobile software, including Pocket versions of Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Outlook, Windows Media Player and others.

The power button on the X30 is on the front at the top center of the brushed silver case. The four standard application buttons at the bottom of the case launch Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, and Home. The 5-way navigation button has an "action" button in the middle.

The X3 has a 3.5-inch, 240x320 transflective color display. Like with other Pocket PCs, if you know how to use Windows, you can use Pocket PC. All three models also include an expansion slot that supports SDIO cards. And in other good news, all the Dell handhelds have batteries that can be replaced, so you can buy a spare. Dell also offers high-capacity batteries, which will keep your Pocket PC running longer between charges.

Pro: A whole lot of PDA for the money. Many options to suit your price range. Con: Pocket PCs don’t work with Macintoshes.
