Cuisinart Classic Toaster Oven Broiler TOB-50
Date Published: 4/26/06
The Cuisinart Classic Toaster Oven Broiler TOB-50 is an elegantly designed, easy-to-use appliance.
At 9.25 inches tall, 12 inches wide, and 18 inches deep, this model has a 0.5-cubic-foot capacity and can toast up to six slices of bread. It has a roomy interior that can accommodate casserole dishes up to 10x11 inches. The housing features an attractive brushed chrome and black finish. The classic design includes a large tinted glass door with a silver handle and a silver control panel. A nice feature of this unit is the door stop, which lets you leave the oven door slightly ajar during broiling tasks.
We found the controls to be quite intuitive. There are three easy-to-use dials. The temperature dial has standard settings (from 200 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit) plus Broil. The function dial has four options: Bake, Broil, Toast, and Off. The toast shade dial can be set to light, medium or dark (or anywhere in between). The front panel also includes a Start button, which begins the toasting cycle, and a Stop button to cancel operation. A red LED indicator light illuminates during toasting, broiling and baking.
The TOB-50 comes with two wire oven racks and has three rack positions. When toasting, the oven rack should be placed at level "B," which positions the food in the center of the oven. The toasting was fairly even; however, in several of our tests we found that the top of the bread toasted slightly darker than the bottom. Five beeps let you know when the toasting cycle is complete before automatically shutting off. The slide-out crumb tray is accessed from the rear of the unit.
This unit also comes with its own 10x11.5-inch bake/broil pan and drip tray. It is perfect for baking four fish fillets or hamburger patties. The reversible drip tray can be positioned so that foods rest higher or lower in the pan, depending on the type of food being prepared. The preheating time for this unit was 10 to 15 minutes. The TOB-50 does a good job with frozen French fries, pizza and other convenience foods. An included instruction/recipe booklet contains recipes for appetizers, breads, main courses, vegetables and desserts.
Because items in the toaster oven broiler are typically in close proximity to the heating elements, a time and/or temperature adjustment may be needed when baking foods, such as cakes, breads and pies. The oven can accommodate a 9-inch pie plate; however, a tall top crust may brown too quickly so you need to monitor the cooking progress and adjust the temperature or cover the edges of the pie if necessary.
Although the top rack has a midway stop feature, we noticed that the rack has a tendency to tip a bit if pulled too far forward, so caution should be taken when removing weighted items. The top and sides of the oven also get very hot during use. Cuisinart recommends that it be placed 2 to 4 inches away from the wall and other countertop objects.
The interior is large enough to accommodate a 5-pound chicken. It can produce a mouthwatering London broil as well as a crowd-pleasing chocolate chip brownie pie. Cleaning is easy once the oven is cooled. The nonstick interior wipes clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
The Cuisinart Classic Toaster Oven Broiler TOB-50 is a handy oven to use when a larger capacity conventional oven is not required. This classic countertop appliance is both easy to use and easy to clean.
Pros: Large capacity, easy-to-use dial controls, easy-clean interior
