Cub Cadet SLT 1550 lawn tractor

In the SLT 1550, Cub Cadet has created a good residential lawn tractor that performs quite well in large yards.
The 25-hp Kohler Courage V-twin overhead valve engine gives a lot of kick to the SLT 1550, while the hydrostatic transmission balances well with the power. This tractor features a top forward speed of 5.2 mph, and we were pleased to see that it is a strong climber. You'll also find that this machine has some extra zip when the 50-inch mowing deck is removed. Speaking of the deck, the spring-assisted manual lift can adjust the cutting height from 1.5 to 4 inches; we find the deck to be stable at all positions. One issue we have with the SLT 1550, however, is that the draft from the cutting deck makes for inconsistent discharge; you may also encounter these issues when using the bagging attachments. The optimal mulching kit helps alleviate this problem to a degree, but the blast of clipping from under the mower can also be inconsistent. This is not necessarily a major issue and does not affect cut quality, but it is something to note for those who like to keep a tidy yard free of clippings.
The SLT 1550's handling is smooth in normal yard conditions, making this a suitable tractor for both light- and medium-duty work; we did, however, notice a slight jolt when first accelerating from time to time. Even when powering up hills or cutting overgrown patches, this is a quiet-running machine, even with the mowing deck hard at work. The 3.5-gallon tank allows you to service large multiple-acre yards. The turn radius of 21 inches makes some precision cutting around shrubs and trees a bit tricky, but you're bound to make up that time thanks to the large cutting deck.
As with most lawn tractors, this one is compatible with a good variety of optional attachments. The snow thrower and snow blades are good options, as the SLT 1550's 25-hp engine provides for efficient snow removal. A bagging system, pull carts and a pull-behind sprayer add to this machine's versatility. The SLT 1550 adapts well to add-ons and operates smoothly no matter what it is used for.
You can expect the Cub Cadet SLT 1550 25-hp lawn tractor to perform well in any setting, although it excels in larger yards. Grass discharge can be inconsistent and you'll get occasional bucks, but overall, this is a smooth, powerful tractor.
