Cub Cadet GT 2550 garden tractor
Date Published: 4/14/08
The Cub Cadet GT 2550 garden tractor is a good example of a company piecing together the right parts to build a quality machine without breaking the bank; this is a high-performance garden tractor that rivals its more expensive tractors in terms of execution and versatility.
The 22-hp Kohler Command V-Twin engine is at the heart of the GT 2550. Its high top-forward speed of 5.8 mph makes mowing a breeze. The tractor's 50-inch cutting deck is easily adjusted by hand lever and offers cutting height options from 1.5 to 4 inches. A triple-blade system gives an even cut on all terrain types, and the deck flotation is stable on hills and uneven land. The side discharge can get a little overwhelmed in thick patches of tall growth, even when the bagging attachment is implemented; this likely won't be much of an issue, however, as most of the higher-growth areas you'll encounter won't require the tidy appearance of a freshly manicured lawn. The 2.25-gallon fuel tank is a little too small for ranch or farm operation, though it is fine for yards of up to 2.5 acres or so.
The CT 2550's handling is fine and the advanced hydrostatic transmission runs smoothly. Slowing down to make precision cuts is easy, as the gently engaged engine never overpowers the transmission. Turning on hills and inclines feels tight and balanced, and the turning radius of 20 inches is acceptable for most mowing jobs that require clean lines. For garden use, the available pull-behind 30-inch dual-direction hydraulic-driven rear-tine tiller is a great utility tool that the GT 2550 easily pulls along. Snow-clearing equipment -- including a blade and a snow thrower -- are great options. We are impressed that the seemingly small 22-hp engine never suffers from a deficit of power, which is further proof that horsepower alone doesn't always indicate operational capacity.
Much of the Cub Cadet line is designed for light-to-medium-duty tasks, but the GT 2550 is tough enough for even hardier tasks. The balance and stability of this tractor is impressive, and residential owners with larger yards and a modest garden will appreciate this machine's versatility, especially if they plan to use it in the winter. Farm and ranch owners with relatively small plots of land can benefit from this tractor as well, though constant heavy-duty use may wear out the suspension and strain the mechanical system.
The Cub Cadet GT 2550 is a high-end residential garden tractor, but it isn't designed for hardcore commercial use. Those looking for a tough machine with which to tame large yards and smaller ranch and farm ground, however, will be pleased with its performance and versatility.
