Cub Cadet CC 10M gas-powered push mower

Date Published: 4/2/08

The Cub Cadet CC 10M push mower packs several premium features into an affordably-priced package, but it is missing some of the creature comforts that are normally found in this price range. Thanks to its efficient engine, smooth moves and excellent mulching performance, The CC 10M is worth checking out if you have a smaller lawn and mow frequently.

We are very impressed with the CC 10M's CycleCut cutting system, which utilizes an innovative deck design that helps suspend grass and push it to the outside of the blade for improved mulching capability. It works so well that you practically get dual-blade cutting performance at a fraction of the cost. In fact, it's a good thing that the mulching works so well, because this 2-in-1 system does not come with a bag, which is otherwise common in this price range. Without the bag, however, the CC 10M stays light and lean, which makes the mowing experience markedly easier.

The 139cc engine may be a turn-off for those looking for more oomph in your output, but don't put too much credence in the cc's; due to this machine's overhead valve design, this engine provides more power then its side-valve cousins while providing quieter, more efficient performance. Although we think the engine performs well for a 139cc model, you may want to look into a more powerful engine if you have a large yard or thicker grass. This engine also boasts a "SureStart Guarantee" that sounds great, but mind the small print; this guarantee only applies under certain conditions. If you maintain your mower properly, you really shouldn't have any issue starting your mower anyway. We do find the generous 3-year limited warranty impressive, however.

Another useful feature is the ball bearing wheels, which provide an easier push. This helps to make up for the smallish 8-inch wheels. The ball bearings also eliminate the gradual wear-down and subsequent wobble that afflicts plastic wheels without ball bearings. Although the CC 10M is not as easy to maneuver around trees and shrubs as mowers with larger rear wheels, the smoother ride certainly makes inclines easier to handle.

In the end, the Cub Cadet CC 10M is a bit problematic. It offers several premium features, but lacks some basic features -- such as a bag or single-lever height adjustment -- for which you likely would gladly pay a little extra. If you have a smaller lawn with or without uneven ground and intend to mow frequently, the Cub Cadet 139cc CC 10M is a very nice value.

Pros: Excellent mulching capability, ball bearings, overhead valve engine, 3-year limited warranty, SureStart Guarantee
Cons: Individual wheel height adjustment, front and rear tires are same height, no bag, smaller engine

Warranty
3 years, limited
