The Craftsman Professional 15-Inch Planer 21702 (Sears item 009217020000) can plane stock up to 6 inches deep and 15 inches wide. It's a great addition to the shop of a serious woodworker. The 3-hp single-phase motor drives a three-blade, 3-inch cutter head to deliver 15,000 cuts per minute at two speeds, 16 or 25 fpm. Maximum depth of cut is 1/8 inch. A digital display makes for quick and easy setups.

The 21702 delivers a very smooth, nearly ready-to-finish surface with minimal snipe. We particularly liked the side-mounted crank. It's easier to use than the top-mounted cranks found on some models. The unit's top-mounted rollers make it much less strenuous to pull long boards back in order to make the next pass. A 4-inch chip chute allows the operator to connect to dust collection or shop vac. Be aware that you will need a 230-volt power supply for this tool.
