Craftsman DYS 4500 riding mower
Date Published: 4/8/08
The Craftsman DYS 4500 is a high-end riding mower that is amongst the best in its class for performance and functionality. The large 54-inch cutting deck is the hallmark of this machine, and Craftsman has added a lot of easy-to-use controls, thus making this a truly excellent riding mower.
The DYS 4500 is powered by a 26-hp Kohler Pro engine that offers strong performance on flats and small hills and runs much more quietly than most riding mowers. In fact, even with its cutting deck engaged, the noise produced by this machine is relatively minor. The speed that can be achieved on the DYS 4500 is average, but its power is adequate for mowing on moderate hills and inclines.
The operation of the DYS 4500 is very easy to understand; a single foot pedal propels and reverses the machine in a logical fashion, and the automatic transmission is responsive and smooth. Cruise control is also included, if you're mowing a yard with few obstacles. The turning radius of 16 inches is slightly wider than the radii of many riding mowers, but keep in mind that the wider turning radius is largely the result of the presence of the large cutting deck. The easily adjustable deck delivers cut heights from 1 to 4 inches with six different settings; we find that the lower settings offer a very good, even cut on mild and rugged terrain, but when the deck is raised above 3 inches, it wobbles a bit on bumpy land and gives a slightly uneven cut. The cut can also be off if you turn too quickly on hills when using these higher settings, but the deck is always stable enough to never gauge the grass.
The sturdy construction of the DYS 4500's frame makes this a tough mower that is able to handle residential yards of varying growth. Large thickets of weeds are quickly and evenly cut down, while normally manicured lawns are quickly and efficiently mowed thanks to the large cutting deck. Adding to the value of this tractor is the fact it has just enough kick to function as a respectable snow remover and hauling machine. The engine is a little underpowered for heavy-duty tasks, but the sturdy construction and reliable suspension add versatility to the DYS 4500. In the winter, users can connect an optional blade and snow thrower, neither of which are difficult to attach. For mowing purposes, two different bagging systems and a mulching blade are available. Standard hauling equipment such as poly carts are easy to attach and are fine for light- to medium-duty yard work.
From its easy-to-use controls to the excellent cut that is generally supplied by its 54-inch cutting deck, the DYS 4500 will likely make homeowners very happy. In fact, the only real problem with this machine is that its slightly underpowered engine can hinder its top speed and power.
Pros: Easy-to-understand controls, comfortable ride, good attachment selection, large cutting deck, less noisy than most other mowers
Cons: Low maximum speed, slightly underpowered engine, upper cutting height settings can produce uneven cut on rough terrain
