Craftsman Belt/Disc Sander 21520

If you do a lot of sanding in your workshop but are tired of handheld units that are difficult to control, consider the Craftsman Belt/Disc Sander 21520 (Sears item 00921520000). It incorporates a big 4x36-inch belt and an 8-inch diameter disc in one compact, relatively inexpensive bench top tool. Although the motor that delivers the power is a relatively small 4.7 amps (1/2 hp peak), we found it delivered plenty of power for squaring board edges and ends. Face sanding is easier as well. Belt speed is 1100 fpm and disc speed is 2200 rpm--both of which cannot be varied.
Table size--for use with the disc or belt--is on the small side (6x9 inches) and is made of cast aluminum. You use the same table for both the belt and the disc, but shifting it from one to the other only takes a few minutes. The table can be tilted in either mode. With the belt, the table can be tilted from 0 to 90 degrees; with the disc, from 0 to 45 degrees. The table is slotted for a small miter gauge (included). A work stop is provided should you want to use one when sanding with the belt in its horizontal position.
The 21520's dust collection bag collected roughly 90 percent of the dust generated in our test project. The unit is relatively quiet, thanks in part to rubber feet for the base. Although this machine weighs a hefty 55 pounds, it needs to be clamped to a workbench or table if you plan to sand large, heavy work pieces.
