Craftsman 88140000
Date Published: 10/1/07
Craftsman's 88140000 (which is available at Sears as model number 07188140000) is a fairly inexpensive solution to clearing snow that resembles a basic lawnmower, but for snow. In fact, this model is so much like a lawn mower that it uses a 4-hp engine from Briggs & Stratton -- a well-known lawn mower engine manufacturer.
Basic as this model is, it does boast a 4-cycle engine, which beats the messy mixing of oil and gas found in a 2-cycle engine any day. Simply fill this snow blower with gasoline and you're on your way.
What the 88140000 lacks is self-propelled wheels, which doesn't pose much of a problem on a flat, snowy surface -- you can simply slide it along. On an incline, however, this can pose a challenge. If you need to go uphill, you'll have to push all 78 pounds of this machine.
This model is not the sturdiest or most weather-resistant machine that you can find, but it can ease the burden of cleaning up a light snowfall of preferably no more than 6-8 inches. Heavy, wet snow poses a big problem for the 88140000, so if you get lots of this kind of snow where you live, you might want to consider a heftier machine.
The 88140000 is also not our choice for very cold climates. If you expect lots of sub-zero temperatures, this mild-mannered model is not for you. Leave this machine for those living in the more moderate climates and get yourself a machine that is more resistant to cold weather.
These conditions can take a toll on the 88140000. Users who attempted to save money and force this Craftsman beyond its capabilities have reported problems with the handle bending from strain and vibration. This model is not equipped with electric start, so starting the machine can also be difficult if it gets very cold.
Consider this model if you live where you're likely to get a few small snowfalls and where temperatures don't often stray much lower than 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit. The 88140000 is not made for the extreme climates, but it is good insurance against shoveling in areas where the climate is relatively moderate.
Pros: Doesn't require mixing gas and oil, chute rotates 190 degrees, does well with light snow
Cons: No electric start, requires pushing, flimsy handle, not for heavy or wet snow
