Craftsman 28846 garden tractor

The Craftsman 28846 garden tractor is one of a growing line of improved Craftsman garden tractors that evolved from the company's DYS series. By tweaking the areas that needed improvement and keeping the functional elements intact, Craftsman has made a fine machine that does a good job with ground-engaging attachments.
At the heart of this machine is a 26-hp Kohler engine that gives the transmission a good punch, even when this tractor operates heavy-duty ground-engaging tools. The extra-large 54-inch cutting deck is the main attachment, and it does a great job in normal residential conditions. Medium-to-light heavy-duty mowing jobs are simple, thanks to the triple-bladed cutting deck. Unfortunately, as with many other tractors with large cutting decks, the side discharge is a bit unpredictable because of the strong draft that is created under the machine. The disk harrow and crop cultivator tools do little to slow down the powerful engine, even in rough conditions.
Handling and controls are responsive and quite good. The gauge wheels do a good job balancing the flotation of the cutting deck. The ride can get a little rough for the operator on uneven terrain, but the suspension keeps the working components level despite the transmission of the bumps through the rigid frame. The spring-loaded cutting deck system is hand-adjusted and cuts grass to a height of 1.5 to 4 inches; performance is roughly equal at all settings, although we noticed that the inconsistency of the side discharge was slightly alleviated when mowing at a greater height. The large 23-inch rear tires stick well to hills and power through rough terrain. We do find that when jarred, the adjustable seat has a habit of slipping slightly, though never enough to makes us feel as though we aren't in control of the tractor.
The hydrostatic transmission and engine are both very well made; commercial operators may want to consider the 28846 for light-duty professional use. The huge cutting deck makes short work of large yards, and the versatility of the supported attachments give this tractor added value for farm and ranch work. The 18-inch turning radius is good for a cutting deck this size and helps give finesse cuts around obstacles and trees. The steering on this machine is smooth, as well.
Greasing wheels, changing oil and other routine tasks are very easy. Craftsman's wide variety of attachments, which include bagging systems and mulching kits, require a little elbow grease, but are not particularly difficult to add to the tractor. Winter attachments are also worth considering, since the powerful engine has no trouble moving snow like a champ. Overall, the Craftsman 28846 is a strong garden tractor at a good price that will handle medium-duty tasks with ease.
Pros: Good value, strong engine, good handling, good flotation and cut
Cons: Bumpy ride, attachments require a bit of work to get on and off
