Craftsman 16731 Compressor
Date Published: 2/4/08
The 6-hp, 30-gallon Craftsman 16731 Compressor packs a wallop. It is a vertical version of the traditional full-size, oil-free electric air compressor. Its SCFM and maximum psi (150) are in the upper range among competitive offerings. Combine that with the smaller amount of space its footprint takes up (20x19 inches), and it seems many shoppers might opt for this model. The compressor took 7 minutes to charge. It kicked on for recharging as expected. Fitted with two oversize wheels and a foamy, soft-grip handle--though not fastened down--the compressor is easy to wheel around. A comprehensive list of pneumatic tools and their compressor rating requirements is smartly affixed to the top of the unit. The compressor is suited to all the "consumer-rated" tools listed, even the most demanding; but that is not the case for the professional-grade tools marked--11 of 31 need a stronger compressor. The motor and other components on top of the tank are nicely encased in a black plastic shell. The vertical orientation of the tank may be advantageous from the standpoint that condensation inside the tank will certainly collect at the bottom of the tank adjacent to the drain hole. The compressor's handle works well, coincidentally, for hanging hoses or tools. The compressor comes with a heavy-duty cord and quick-connect fitting. Noise output is loud.
