Craftsman 1/2-hp Garage Door Opener 53985

Date Published: 1/23/07

It's not the most powerful -- or quietest -- model on the market, but the Craftsman 1/2-hp Garage Door Opener 53985 (Sears item 00953985000) is an inexpensive opener that comes with a few nice features.

For around $180, you'd expect more than a stripped-down basic opener, and this model delivers. It comes with two remote controls that use 100 billion rolling codes that change every time you press the button for added security. It's also got a wireless keypad you can affix to the exterior of your door, and infrared sensors that prevent the door from closing if something gets in the way of the beam. This model also has two lights that can be set to turn off automatically between 1 and 4 minutes.

Yes, the extra features are convenient additions, but keep in mind that this opener is powered by a not-too-hefty 1/2-horsepower motor, and uses a chain drive, which is louder than the belt drives used by more expensive models. The Craftsman 1/2-hp Garage Door Opener 53985 is covered by a 90-day limited warranty.

Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: Low power

Warranty
90 days, limited
