Companion 38517 gas-powered push mower
Date Published: 4/2/08
If you are looking to buy a light-duty gas-powered push mower with a price that will barely dent your bank account, then the Companion 38517 could be the machine for you.
This mower weighs in at only 55 pounds, which is well below average for basic push mowers that are available in today's market. We never feel tired or worn out while pushing this mower around the yard, which will be a very welcome asset during the hot summer months. When not in use, this mower will not cramp your style, as it has one of the smallest footprints you'll find on a gas-powered model; just fold the collapsible handles down and you may forget the mower is even in your storage space.
We recommend adding the optional side-discharge bag to cut down on post-mowing cleanup. This mower requires no mechanical ability or tools to get started; it comes fully assembled from the factory. You just need to fold out the handles and point yourself toward the nearest patch of overgrown grass.
We are disappointed in the small mowing deck, however; it measures only 20 inches across, which represents one of the smallest in its class. While this compact size allows for easy storage, it also necessitates more time spent mowing, as each pass gives you less than two feet of shorn lawn. Additionally, this bare-bones model only comes with a rope pull start, so be sure to prepare your shoulder before each use. And since all four wheels measure the same height -- a mere seven inches in diameter -- much of your time will be spent muscling this lightweight mower in the proper direction. If you have an uneven lawn grade, take this into consideration and be sure to test out models that have a higher rear wheel assembly.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a stripped-down lawn mower for standard residential to light residential use, then you cannot beat the Companion 38517's value; we confidently recommend this mower for the smallest, flattest yards. However, if you are in need of a strong engine or a push mower that can handle hills and dips, you should probably avoid this machine.
Pros: Lightweight, very affordable
Cons: Small cutting area, poor maneuverability, side discharge only
