Combi Savona Travel System

Date Published: 4/21/08

The Combi Savona Travel System is a good-looking car seat/stroller combination at an attractive price.

We like the ability to clip Combi's matching Tyro car seat to the stroller. This creates an instant travel system. The fabric is a durable, rip-stop nylon that is easy to keep clean. The stroller folds with ease, but it is difficult to open. During testing, it was not easy to open with one hand; it took two hands and sometimes a helper to unfold the stroller. The stroller has a height-adjustable handle, and while this is typically a feature we applaud, it just doesn't get the job done. Even at maximum height, the handle seems shorter than other adjustable models. Unfortunately, the stroller wheels are smaller than we'd like, and seem to find every crack in the sidewalk. It simply was not practical to navigate this stroller over uneven terrain. We like the storage pocket on the back of the stroller because it easily holds car keys or small accessories. However, we find the underseat storage a little too small for a large diaper bag or shopping bag.

The Combi Savona Travel System's infant car seat accommodates children from birth to 22 pounds. It is comfortably padded and has a generous canopy. The car seat's buckle system can be difficult to operate, particularly if one is trying to match the buckle parts together as an infant is wiggling. The length of the five-point harness can be adjusted with the push of a button. Unfortunately, the button is very difficult to find. After searching, we realized it is under the car seat's fabric cover -- completely hidden from view. The car seat's carrying handle is not comfortable, but we like the bubble levels on the car seat base, which indicate when it is installed at the correct angle. The stay-in-car base makes it easy to move the car seat from vehicle to stroller.

The bottom line? Although the Combi Savona Travel System looks good, and is priced right, it doesn't perform as well as we expected.

Pros: Budget price, complete travel system
Cons: Car seat buckle is inconvenient, stroller doesn't steer well
