Combi Kobuk in Black 8970 Toddler-to-Booster Car Seat
Date Published: 4/14/08
The Combi Kobuk in Black 8970 doesn't have a hefty price tag, but it does offer plenty of reasons to take a closer look. The Combi Kobuk in Black has EPS foam in the head area, converts to a backless booster and sports an innovative belt-positioning system. It is a forward-facing car seat that can be used as a car seat/booster car seat for children weighing 33 to 100 pounds and 33 to 57 inches tall.
The Combi Kobuk in Black has an energy-absorbing EPS foam lining in the head area and it has deep side wings; however, we prefer an EPS foam lining cover the car seat as a whole. However, it does have enhanced side impact protection, thanks to wings on each side of the car seat in the head, shoulder and hip areas. The Combi Kobuk in Black has a detachable back, which allows it to convert to a backless booster, and it has a headrest that adjusts vertically.
Although the Combi Kobuk in Black does not have a five-point harness (many booster seats do not), it does have one of the most effective and user-friendly belt-positioning systems we've encountered. The Combi Kobuk uses the vehicle's safety belts to restrain its passenger. The seat belt guides adjust vertically and horizontally for a better fit, and this is a feature that is far superior to other models in the Combi Kobuk's modest price range. The combination of shoulder and armrest guides really provides a comfortable fit for children in a variety of sizes. The seat belt stays on the shoulder, and doesn't rub on the neck. There is a removable cup holder, but it seems to get in the way. The Combi Kobuk's fabric cover is removable and can be washed by hand.
At about 10 pounds, the Combi Kobuk in Black is easy to manage. Overall, we like this car seat for its design, EPS foam lining, and user-friendly features -- all at a price lower than most of its competitors.
Pros: EPS foam, lightweight, accommodates children from 33 to 100 pounds, low price
Cons: No five-point harness
