Chef's Choice Belgian WafflePro Taste/Texture Select 850

Date Published: 11/22/06

The Chef's Choice Belgian WafflePro Taste/Texture Select 850 makes delectable waffles in a matter of minutes. Baking waffles to your desired preference is easy with the "Taste Select" button.

Most of this unit is constructed from stainless steel, weighs about 8 pounds and measures 11.5 inches by 12 inches and stands 3.5 inches tall.

This commercial-quality waffle maker bakes a large 8.5-inch square deep pocket Belgian waffle in 90 to 120 seconds. The large, square cooking surface is perforated to separate into four waffle squares. One of this unit's best features is the adjustable baking time and temperature, which lets you customize your waffle crispness. The "Taste Select" button lets you choose a "Crisp Exterior, Moist Interior" for a fast baked waffle, or "Uniform Texture" for the waffle to bake slowly and result in both a crispy interior and exterior.

A rotating Color Adjust dial lets you select the baking temperature. The dial is numbered one (light) through six (dark). The unit also has a Baking Time Display, which is essentially a digital timer that counts down the time remaining once the baking begins. Three beeps let you know that the waffle is ready.

The unit's nonstick interior requires only water to keep the waffles from sticking. We loved the fact that there was no need for oil or nonstick sprays, which often leave a sticky residue. While the plates are heating up, and before the ready light comes on, simply open the lid and add 1-2 tablespoons of water to the lower waffle plates. This conditions the plates and needs to be done only once before you begin baking each batch of waffles. We noticed that this creates a bit of steam so be sure to wear oven mitts and close the lid quickly to allow the steam to evaporate.

As soon as you plug in the WafflePro, a 1-second beep signals that the unit is on and heating. A green "Ready for Baking" light illuminates when the set temperature has been reached, and an audible 1-second beep will sound. Once a desired baking time is chosen, the unit will automatically store this time setting. It can be changed any time the green light is on.

Approximately one cup of batter is needed for each four-part waffle. The batter is detected automatically and the timer begins to count down the baking time. A series of three short beeps signals that the baking cycle has ended and the waffle is ready. A plastic handle with a locking latch keeps the lid closed during baking and stays cool to the touch. The hinged lid remains in the upright position for easy waffle removal.

One nice safety feature is the "Sleep Mode." If the WafflePro is left unattended for 45 minutes, the waffle plates will begin to cool. Any button may be pressed to begin re-heating the unit again.

Thanks to its nonstick plates, this unit is very easy to clean. As long as you've properly preheated the plates before pouring the batter, you should not experience any sticking. If an overabundance of batter is added to plates it will spill out into the perimeter overflow channel. When solidified slightly this excess batter is easily wiped away. The cooled baking plates can be cleaned with a moist soft tooth brush, cotton swab or thin cloth. The exterior of the unit can be cleaned with a damp soft cloth and mild detergent. The cord stores underneath the unit in its own cord loop area.

The Belgian WafflePro Taste/Texture Select 850 is a restaurant-quality waffle maker perfect for feeding a family or entertaining friends. Because the waffles bake so quickly, it only takes a matter of minutes to get a hot, large plateful onto the table. The WafflePro produces evenly baked, deep pocket, delicious Belgian waffles every time.
