Chamberlain PD420 Power Drive Screw-Drive Garage Door Opener
Date Published: 7/23/08
In line with other screw-drive garage door openers, the Chamberlain PD420 has a 0.5-hp motor and a "rolling code" security programming that changes the access code--out of billions of combinations--every time the door is opened. (It seems this technology is available on all but the lowest-end units among all garage door opener models, and Consumer Guide believes it's worth paying for this technology.) Also like other offerings, this unit includes an automatic function that will reverse a closing door if objects are detected in its way by a sensors--a technology quickly becoming, if not already, standard across the segment. The manufacturer claims sensor brackets attach easily to garage door rails and without tools, which is important because in cases of older garage doors--say 20+ years--the door's rails may not be perfectly suited to the assembly of these brackets. In the case of replacing an existing opener, the manufacturer has designed the system so one can use existing brackets to install the body of the unit. This model's in-garage, multifunction door control has an oversize, lighted button for activating the door, a button for controlling the light (two 100-W bulbs), and a "lock switch" that blocks remote control signals, a useful feature when the homeowner is away. A PosiLock device is said to securely lock the garage door when it is down. This model comes with one single-function remote control and a 6-year motor warranty. It also comes with two single-function remote controls. All Chamberlain Power Drive openers are compatible with the HomeLink in-vehicle universal remote control system.
