Celestron VistaPix 72216 binoculars

Date Published: 3/7/06

The VistaPix 72216 is an affordable, mid-size, second-generation-model in Celestron's line of binoculars with photographic memory. Both it and the other binoculars in the VistaPix line have the ability to digitally capture images. This VistaPix features inline-style construction (roof prism), 8 MB of SDRAM memory (8/20-picture storage at high/low resolution) plus an auxiliary SD card slot, and powerful 8X binocular magnification. Picture resolution is limited to 1600x1200 pixels (use of a 2.0 mega pixel CCD), which is fine for 5x4-inch prints or for viewing on the computer monitor (1600x1200 on an average 19-inch to 21-inch CRT). However, this second generation model suffers from some of the same drawbacks as first generation models. Video quality is poor in all lights. Additionally, low-light photos, due to the enlarged but still too small 32mm objective lens, are also poor. This is more of a problem than one might at first think. Consider that a major attraction of these camera-binocs is to capture bird sighting, which often take place under forest shadow. On the other hand, well-lit photos have acceptable quality. Some nice features of the VistaPix include a tripod mount, which is essential to the picture clarity of objects 40+ yards away. Without a tripod, all but the steadiest of hands will result in even, well lit photos of marginal quality. Celestron was ambitious in building an 8x32 binocular with a built-in digital camera for less than $170. Overall, the VistaPix 72216 doubles as a decent pair of binoculars and a budget digital camera. However, for the enthusiast, this model is no replacement for either.
