Celestron SkyScout Personal Planetarium

Date Published: 10/3/07

Set your sights on the night sky and embark on your own personal tour of the cosmos with Celestron's SkyScout Personal Planetarium. Just aim SkyScout at the heavens and its Global Positioning System (GPS) and magnetic-field sensors identify thousands of celestial objects with the touch of a button, including planets, more than 6,000 stars, 88 constellations and over 100 deep-space objects, including galaxies, nebulae and star clusters.

About the size of a camcorder, the handheld SkyScout is smartly engineered, easy to grip, simple to use and amazingly accurate. Powered by two AA batteries, the SkyScout is up and running right after taking it out of the box. Press the power button and the unit gets its GPS bearings in less than a minute. The one-touch controls are more easily navigated than a television remote, and the features work exactly as described.

To use the SkyScout, simply point the lens at a celestial object, push the "Identify" button and the unit displays the object's identity and produces a text description. For more than 200 of the most popular and easy-to-see objects, you can also listen to an audio narration (earphones included) delivered in a clear, friendly voice that is very easy to understand. The SkyScout also includes a "Locate mode," where you select an object from the unit's menu and follow the directional arrows through the viewfinder to locate the object. Thanks to a red LED backlight, the display screen is easy to read even at night.

And taking things a bit further, the SkyScout also offers a built-in field guide and has all kinds of facts and information that you will find entertaining as well as educational on the most popular celestial objects. Celestron's amazing SkyScout Personal Planetarium puts the universe in the palm of your hand.

Pros: Identifies over 6,000 stars, planets, constellations and deep-space objects in seconds, easy-to-operate one-touch controls, lightweight and easy to grip, easy-to-read LED-backlit display screen, well-written quick-start instruction guide
Cons: Battery-compartment cover requires removal of screw to access/change batteries
