Celestron NexStar 8i (XLT) SE
Date Published: 1/11/08
The NexStar 8i (XLT) SE is a throwback to Celestron's original orange tube 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. While the two models sport a similar look, the 8i (XLT) SE is a thoroughly updated scope, with some of the latest state-of-the-art features.
A new fast alignment system called SkyAlign allows you to quickly line up the scope using any three bright celestial objects. Computer controlled goto capabilities include a database of over 40,000 celestial objects and the ability to add up to 400 additional favorites.
The NexStar 8i (XLT) SE uses a single fork altazimuth mount that also provides storage for the tracking computer's hand controller. Other nice touches include flash upgradeable hand and motor controllers, which allow easy updating of the scope's software; an RS-232 communications port, for connecting the scope to your own computer; and a GPS compatibility option.
Weighing in at around 24 pounds, the 8i (XLT) SE is surprisingly lightweight. For general use, the mount holds up well, with no tracking issues or unusual shaking. We were not able to determine how well it would work with the added weight of a camera for astrophotography, but we would not expect any insurmountable problems.
The alignment process delivered as described, a simple matter of pointing the scope at three known objects in the sky. Once aligned, the scope is able to slew to any of the objects in its database with the entry of a few commands in the hand controller. Once locked onto an object, the tracking system kept the object dead center.
Viewing is dependent on location, sky conditions, and the eyepieces you use, but in our tests, the 8i (XLT) SE performed superbly. The StarBright XLT anti-reflective coating reduces reflections and produces bright images. The only flaw is the focusing. The 8i (XLT) SE uses a focus knob located on the scope's body, below the star diagonal. Its position is not only awkward to access, but can make it difficult to get an image into sharp focus.
The Celestron NexStar 8i (XLT) SE is a truly easy-to-use, highly portable telescope that is suitable for both planetary and deep space viewing.
Pros: Bright, lightweight scope with a large 8-inch aperture for excellent light gathering capabilities, computerized scope can quickly bring 40,000 objects into the center of your eyepiece, customizable database
Cons: Focuser is awkward, lightweight single-arm mount may make long exposure astrophotography a little tricky
