Casio Exilim EX-V7

When shopping for a digital camera, practically everyone is looking for specific -- and often different -- features. Some people want high resolutions, some want fast responses and some want simple models. Some, however, value a stylish model with at least one unique feature that will make their friends jealous above all else. Casio's ultra-compact Exilim EX-V7 (part of the Exilim "Hi-Zoom" category) definitely fits in the latter category, although it features more than simply good looks and novelty.
Not only does the EX-V7 offers a 7X optical zoom lens -- a feature that is rarely found on an ultra-compact model -- but the zoom lens doesn't extend beyond the camera body, even when the zoom is at full magnification; all of the zooming action of the lens takes place inside the camera body, which is an interesting feature.
The EX-V7 offers 7.2 megapixels of resolution, which is slightly above average for an ultra-compact digital camera and should be enough to make high-quality prints of up to 11X14 inches. You'll rarely be able to make prints that large, however, because the camera's overall image quality is average to below-average. Indoor and low-light photos can be especially soft and noisy.
Additionally, the EX-V7 doesn't offer an optical viewfinder; using the unit's 2.5-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) is the only way you can frame your photos. Fortunately, the LCD is very sharp and bright, but it still would be nice to have an optical viewfinder as an option.
Casio has made use of several different software technologies to achieve image stabilization (IS) in the EX-V7; unfortunately, this combination is not quite as successful in reducing camera shake as optical IS. Add in a weak built-in flash and it's tough to shoot in low-light conditions at maximum zoom and still produce acceptable large prints.
Response times are average to above average with the EX-V7. You can shoot your first photo 1.5-2 seconds after pressing the power button. Shutter lag -- approximately .008 seconds -- is not noticeable most of the time. Shot-to-shot delays range from 1.5-5 seconds, with longer delays occurring when using the flash.
You'll encounter a few drawbacks when it comes to accessories with the EX-V7. Casio included 11.6 megabytes of internal memory for storing photos with this model, but that's not enough for more than an emergency storage area. Additionally, the EX-V7 only runs from a proprietary battery, meaning you may want to purchase a second battery as a backup. Finally, the EX-V7 requires a bulky docking cradle to connect to your computer.
With its 7X optical zoom lens, the EX-V7 has one of the largest zoom lenses in the ultra-compact category. At 0.99 inches in thickness, it also just fits into said category. However, it still will fit in a pocket pretty easily and comfortably.
The EX-V7 offers some unique features, making it an interesting ultra-compact model. It does, however, have quite a few minor drawbacks, the most troublesome being the soft image quality you'll receive more often than you should. Even though it's a fairly good value, you'll want to make sure the EX-V7's drawbacks are in areas that don't match your priorities.
Pros: Unique zoom lens, 7X optical zoom, good response times, thin camera body, bright LCD
Cons: Cradle required to transfer photos, no viewfinder, image-quality is below average in low light, flash should be stronger
