Canton Ergo 611 DC tower speakers
Date Published: 3/2/06
The Canton Ergo 611 DC speakers show that, for a high price, top-end stereo playback is alive and well. In some critic's opinions, high fidelity is a lost art. They feel that the proliferation of small home theater satellite speakers has killed off the pursuit of stereo perfection. However, the 611 DC floor-standing speakers are a throwback to days when tower speakers ruled.
The 611 DC speakers use a classic three-way, bass reflex design that for decades has provided the basis for excellent sound reproduction. However, Canton's new Ergo line uses entirely modern components. Each 611 DC has a 1-inch dome tweeter with an aluminum-manganese driver, a 7-inch midrange with an anodized aluminum cone, and a pair of 9-inch woofers with anodized aluminum cones. Crossover frequencies are placed at 300Hz and 3,500Hz, avoiding the potentially audible crossover point around 1,000Hz that can occur with two-way designs.
The 611 DC's driver complement delivers a frequency response from 20Hz to 40,000Hz, with a nominally flat response, and the twin woofers produce an ample bass response for any music or movie playback. It is worth noting that the woofers are not self-powered. The screwdriver terminals are gold-plated and allow bi-wiring and bi-amp wiring, and each speaker is designed to handle between 200 watts and 350 watts (average). A high-pass filter removes any audio below the audible frequency, which prevents interference.
The cabinets are available in beech, black ash, and cherry veneers. Grilles are available in black or silver, depending on the finish. The Canton Ergo 611 DC speakers are an excellent example of old-school towers that will blow away most contemporary stereo and surround speaker systems. The 611 DC speakers would be ideal in any high-end stereo music system or as the front stereo pair in a surround system, provided you can afford them.
The MSRP of $4,000 is per pair.
