Canon Speedlite 580EX hot shoe flash
Date Published: 3/28/06
The Canon Speedlite 580EX is the top model of the hot shoe flash units offered by Canon for use with their latest film and digital cameras. It replaces the Speedlite 550EX and offers a smaller body, more flash power, faster recycling, consistent color and enhanced operating controls. It's compatible with Canon E-TTL II technology built into newer cameras, which first evaluates subject distance and other information then modifies the flash output power for more accurate exposures, regardless of subject size, reflectance or hue. Thus accurate detail will be recorded in both black tuxedoes and white wedding dresses and still retain accurate flesh tones.
The layout of the legibly marked control buttons and dial on the back below a large, informative illuminated LCD, mimics the style found on Canon cameras so it's easier to set and adjust. There are 14 custom functions for maximum control over flash functions. Features include high-speed synchronization capability for use with faster than normal shutter speeds, wireless synch compatibility, automatic settings, and power ratio control. A diffusion screen that spreads the light for use with ultra wide-angle lenses as short as 14mm and a small white catchlight reflector bounce card are built into the flash head and easily pull out for use. We tested this flash on a Canon EOS A2 SLR. The TTL automatic exposures were exceptionally accurate on a variety of subject brightness's and distances indoors when used as the primary illumination. Outside for flash fill synchro sunlight subjects, the exposures were properly balanced. An external battery pack is optional.
