Canon PowerShot S2 IS digital camera

Zoom lenses in digital cameras rarely go beyond 3X magnification. When they do offer more zoom capabilities, they often introduce problems with camera shake and other issues. But Canon has found a way to minimize such problems with its PowerShot S2 IS digital camera, which is equipped with a 12X optical zoom lens. Canon's image stabilization feature reduces problems with camera shake when the zoom lens is fully extended. Although you may want to use a tripod for some shots with the PowerShot S2 IS, you can shoot maximum zoom photos successfully much of the time while simply holding the camera.
The lens retracts inside its housing when not in use, but the PowerShot S2 IS hardly qualifies as an ultra-thin model, measuring nearly 3 inches in thickness even when powered down. The PowerShot S2 IS's lens produces high-quality photos, both when extended to the full 12X zoom and in close-up shots. Using this digital camera's Super Macro mode means you can shoot a subject from a fraction of an inch away. The PowerShot S2 IS has 5.0 megapixels of resolution, which is high enough to yield 11x14-inch prints of outstanding quality.
The PowerShot S2 IS should appeal to more experienced photographers, since it offers several manual-control features. However, those new to digital camera photography will be able to run the PowerShot S2 IS as a point-and-shoot model.
This digital camera's 1.8-inch LCD is extremely sharp and appears bright in most outdoor lighting conditions. It also can rotate up to 270 degrees, so it can used to take self-portraits and odd-angle photos.
This model's response times range from good to outstanding. The PowerShot S2 IS has a maximum shutter speed of 1/3200 second, one of the fastest available for a consumer digital camera. You can shoot your first photo about 2 seconds after pressing the power button. Shutter lag is not noticeable when you use pre-focus, and it's just under 1 second when using auto-focus. In continuous-shot mode, this digital camera can shoot about two photos per second, but the electronic viewfinder (EVF) blanks between shots, making it a challenge to keep up with a moving subject. Unfortunately, shot-to-shot times can approach 8 seconds when using the flash over long distances.
Finally, the PowerShot S2 IS can run off four AA batteries, which is rare for a digital camera with a large zoom lens.
Pros: Rotating LCD is handy, high-end zoom lens with no camera shake, good response times
Cons: Shot-to-shot delays sometimes are too long, EVF blanks between shots, camera body is thicker than most
