Canon PowerShot A80 4-megapixel digital camera
Date Published: 9/11/07
PowerShot digital cameras from Canon typically have been outstanding models with sharp output and excellent features. The PowerShot A80 fits right in with the other members of the PowerShot family, and it even adds a few new features.
The PowerShot A80 yields high-quality, sharp photos, thanks in large part to its 4.0-megapixel resolution. The PowerShot A80’s 1.5-inch LCD can swivel to almost any angle, which is a handy feature for self-portraits.
Although the PowerShot A80 has many automatic features aimed at beginners, Canon has built several intermediate features into the camera that will appeal to more experienced users. It’s not a professional-level camera by any means, but it will work well for a variety of users. The camera’s body is well balanced, but it’s quite a bit heavier and larger than the ultra-compact digital cameras commonly found in today’s market.
Canon has included several features in the PowerShot A80 that haven’t appeared in previous PowerShot models. The PowerShot A80 is one of the first Canon digital cameras to use PictBridge technology, which allows for direct printing. Canon has also included a new image processor with the PowerShot A80, which speeds the camera’s overall performance and better conserves battery life. The PowerShot A80 has a very good continuous shot mode, which can record four photos in less than 2 seconds.
If you’re looking for some flexibility from a digital camera, the PowerShot A80 can deliver. Canon offers add-on lenses, an underwater case, and other accessories for the PowerShot A80.
Although the PowerShot A80’s user guide is thorough, it’s a little confusing to follow because the topics don’t flow well. However, the camera is easy enough to use that you’ll probably only need the user guide for occasional reference.
Finally, the PowerShot A80 can record up to 3 minutes of video at two different resolutions, which is a handy feature. Throw in the camera’s 3X optical zoom lens, and few cameras can match the PowerShot A80’s list of features and image quality at a price of less than $400.
Pro: Good image quality; nice mix of features for different levels of photographers; great value. Con: Power-up time is only average; body might be a little large for some users.
