Canon Pixma MP510

Date Published: 7/26/07

Canon has combined cool looks with a handy feature list and a good price in its Pixma MP510 multifunction device. The Pixma MP510 doesn't contain a fax function, but it more than makes up for that omission with very strong photo-printing features and a sub-$150 price.

The Pixma MP510's photo-printing features are among the best you'll find in a budget-priced multifunction device. This unit's maximum resolution of 4800x1200 dpi is very good. The Pixma MP510 can print 4x6-inch borderless photos in about 47 seconds, which is above average.

This unit offers memory card slots, allowing you to print directly from your photo cards. The Pixma MP510's 1.9-inch LCD screen is handy for previewing photos, and the screen can fold away when it's not in use. Another great and extremely handy feature: You can make an infrared connection between your cell phone and the Pixma MP510, allowing for wireless printing of photos taken with your phone.

The Pixma MP510's copier and scanner features certainly won't meet the needs of a busy SOHO setting, but they'll be adequate for many users. The copier and printer both run at speeds up to 25 ppm for letter-sized documents in "Draft" mode, but you probably won't receive the print quality you desire in "Draft" mode. The Pixma MP510's copier offers reduction and enlargement between 25 and 400 percent of the original. The unit's scanner works well and fast, offering a 1200x2400 dpi optical resolution.

The biggest drawback to the Pixma MP510 is its lack of a paper tray. You can load paper either through the front of the machine or vertically at the back. These methods leave the Pixma MP510 susceptible to paper jams, and they force you to only load a few sheets of paper at a time, which can be an annoyance. However, the Pixma MP510's photo-friendly features make it a great, low-priced choice among multifunction devices.

Pros: Excellent photo-printing features, low starting price, infrared connection, LCD screen is handy
Cons: No fax function, scanner and copier are average, no paper tray, not a workhorse
