Canon Pixma MP180

Date Published: 8/20/08

Take one look at the sleek (but small) Canon Pixma MP180, and it's pretty obvious this unit isn't a heavy-duty, high-powered inkjet multifunction device. The Pixma MP180 does not even include a fax function. However, for those who can live without fax and who need very good photo-printing capabilities out of their multifunction device, the Pixma MP180 will be a solid option, especially considering its sub-$100 price.

The Pixma MP180's top feature is its print function. Its top color resolution is 4800x1200 dpi, meaning it works well for printing photos. The Pixma MP180 can print 4x6-inch borderless photos in as little as 52 seconds, which is a good result for a multifunction device in this price range. This unit offers memory card slots for direct photo printing, but it has no LCD for previewing photos.

For letter-sized documents, the Pixma MP180 can print and copy at maximum speeds of 22 ppm in "Draft" mode, but you will almost always want to print in the much slower "Best" mode to achieve an acceptable print quality. The copier can resize originals at between 25 and 400 percent, which is good for a unit in this price range. The Pixma MP180's scanner function offers average features, with an optical resolution of 1200x2400 dpi.

Without a fax function, the Pixma MP180 definitely won't appeal to everyone in the market for a multifunction device. However, an equally frustrating aspect of this unit is its lack of a paper tray. You'll have to load blank paper vertically at the back of the machine, making it susceptible to paper jams.

The Pixma MP180 is very small and will look sharp on your desk. If you need a photo printer foremost, and you'd like to use it occasionally as a scanner or copier, the Pixma MP180 represents a great option at a great price. However, it's not a heavy-duty machine, and it will probably not fit the needs of busier SOHO environments.

Pros: Low price, good photo printing, small unit, memory card slots
Cons: No fax function, no paper tray, sometimes suffers from paper jams, no LCD for previewing photos

Warranty
1-year limited
