Canon PC160

Date Published: 7/25/07

The idea of a "desktop" copier seems to be fading away. Most newer personal copiers work well, but they are very large, making it tough to fit them on top of a desk. With its PC160 model, Canon shows it hasn't forgotten those looking for a small and effective copier. The PC160 measures only 4.5 inches in height, weighs only 18.7 pounds and includes a built-in handle for carrying the unit to the desired location.

The PC160 makes sharp copies, thanks to its laser-printing technology. However, that same technology means it can print in only one color at a time. Canon does offer some specialty toner cartridges, allowing you to vary the color. In addition to the standard black copies, you can print in blue, brown, green or red. However, switching colors can be expensive; each cartridge is good for about 1,600 to 2,000 copies and costs about $90 at least. Those replacement cartridges seem a bit pricey for a unit that costs less than $150.

Beyond its portability, the PC160 doesn't offer many features that will overly impress you. At its top speed, the PC160 runs at only 4 ppm, which compares very poorly to other desktop copiers and multifunction devices. You cannot resize originals with the PC160, either, which is disappointing.

Arguably, the PC160's best feature is that it needs no warm-up time before copying, which enhances its portability. Just turn on this desktop copier, and you'll have your first copy 15-22 seconds after pressing the copy button.

Those needing a high-powered, fast desktop copier with tons of specialty features won't put the PC160 on their lists; it just doesn't offer enough power. Those needing portability in a copier, however, will have this unit near the top of their lists, appreciating the PC160's size and fast startup times. The PC160 doesn't offer much power, but it achieves its design goal very well and is great for those needing occasional copies on the go.

Pros: Works well in right circumstances, sharp laser copies, no warm-up time required, very portable unit
Cons: Runs very slowly, no high-end features, replacement cartridges are expensive
