Canon imageCLASS MF6540 multifunction office machine

Canon's imageCLASS MF6540 monochrome laser multifunction device offers great printing speed and sharp output, but it also provides several annoyances -- including its lack of a fax function -- that make it difficult to justify its relatively high price.
The MF6540 works quickly -- you can print and copy at a top speed of 24ppm. This unit produces very sharp text, but because it is a monochrome device, it cannot print color photos. Copier options are somewhat limited; in particular, we would like to see a more expansive zoom and reduction capability. The MF6540 does, however, scan in color or monochrome.
Including a 500-sheet paper tray with the MF6540 is a nice move by Canon's designers, and it speaks to the workhorse nature of this machine. Paper jams within this unit's 50-page automatic document feeder are rare. The MF6540's print speed is very good, as it is able to move from stand-by mode to "first page out" in a matter of seconds. And unlike most inkjet multifunction devices, this unit can perform at close to its maximum print and copy speeds under real-world conditions. You can connect to your Ethernet network, or you can connect it via a USB cable.
There are, however, a few drawbacks to using the MF6540. First, the LCD has no backlight, which is frustrating if the machine is stored away from a direct light source. Additionally, replacement toner cartridges for the MF6540 are more expensive than those of competitors' models. Finally, printing envelopes and labels with the multi-purpose tray was surprisingly difficult; in order to perform these seemingly simple operations, you will have to spend quite a bit of time adjusting settings, and you will have to repeat these adjustments each time you want to use the tray. Therefore, if you print envelopes or other non-standard paper items often, you'll probably want to pass on the MF6540.
At its price, it's tough to recommend the MF6540, despite the fact that it has some very nice features. If its strengths line up with your needs and if you don't need fax capabilities, however, this reliable Canon unit will serve you well.
Pros: Fast prints and copies, sharp output, large paper tray
Cons: No fax capability, difficult-to-use multi-purpose tray, no backlight for LCD, somewhat high price and operational costs
