Canon HV10 HD MiniDV Camcorder

Date Published: 7/15/08

The HV10 is not only Canon's first consumer high-definition MiniDV camcorder, but it is also the smallest 1,080i HD camcorder currently available. Point-and-shoot enthusiasts will love the portability and hassle-free operation, while everyone will appreciate the stunning high-definition images. Unfortunately, the compact size creates some handling issues if you have large hands.

The HV10 records in true 1,080i (1,920X1,080), and the unit's large CMOS sensor delivers 2.07 effective megapixels for both high- and standard-definition widescreen images. The 10X optical/200X digital zoom function is augmented by an effective optical image stabilization system to eradicate unwanted camera shakes during handheld shooting. The resulting HD images are outstanding and far superior to most standard-definition recordings. Colors are balanced without being oversaturated, and images appear razor-sharp and free of noise.

In auto mode, the HV10 is a breeze to use, with the automatic focus and exposure controls responding rapidly to changes in shooting conditions. Manual controls include aperture priority and shutter priority modes, as well as handy external controls for quick adjustments of focus and exposure without having to wade through long menus. While this sounds great in theory, the buttons are difficult to access and use if you have large fingers.

The HV10 performs best as a hybrid DV camcorder. Digital stills can be captured to either MiniDV tape or miniSD card at a maximum resolution of 1,920X1,440. The HV10 also includes plenty of stills functions, such as continuous shooting and automatic exposure bracketing.

The lack of external audio options on the HV10 is disappointing. This camcorder offers no microphone jack, and there is no HDMI connection for a direct digital link to your HDTV. While the quality of both video and stills is outstanding, the compactness of the HV10 high-definition MiniDV camcorder may frustrate you if you are seeking more than simple point-and-shoot recording.

Pros:  Excellent HD images, responsive auto controls, extremely portable
Cons:  Manual controls are hard to use, poor low-light performance, no external audio options, no HDMI connection

Warranty
1 year parts and labor, limited
