The Elura 100 is the only new model for 2006 in Canon's Elura MiniDV camcorder line. It replaces the old Elura 80, 85 and 90 models, and it represents the next step up from Canon's ZR line in terms of features and image quality. Like the ZR models, Canon has reduced the size and weight of the Elura 100, making it a wonderfully compact digital camcorder that you can always keep at hand for capturing those unexpected moments.

In addition to reducing the size, Canon has slashed the Elura's price. Unfortunately, it has also cut the imager size. The Elura 100 offers a 1/5-inch CCD that delivers 1.33 gross megapixels. In 16:9 widescreen mode with the digital image stabilization system off, that translates to 880,000 effective pixels for video. While the imager is smaller than the older Elura models, it is still larger than a lot of competing budget DV camcorders. In well-lit conditions, the Elura 100 captures some very impressive video. Images are sharp and colors are well saturated with a high degree of accuracy. As the quality of light deteriorates, the video inevitably becomes noisier. Fortunately, the Elura 100 features a built-in video light to counter this.

This digital camcorder boasts a smooth 20X optical zoom function along with an 800X digital zoom. Digital stills at a maximum resolution of 1,152X864 can be captured to MiniDV tape or SD/MMC memory card, although no card is included in the Elura 100 package. Canon has incorporated some useful stills functions on the Elura 100, including auto exposure bracketing and a motor drive that can shoot up to five stills per second, ideal for capturing fast-moving sports action.

This digital camcorder offers some expansion possibilities, including an external microphone connection along with a selection of optional lens accessories. The Elura 100 also features a revamped joystick navigation system and a 2-7/10-inch widescreen color LCD monitor.

The Elura 100 is a highly portable model that is comfortable and easy to use, and it offers an impressive feature set for a DV camcorder in this price range.
