Cambridge SoundWorks PlayDock XM boom box
Date Published: 1/7/08
It's a shame to call the Cambridge SoundWorks PlayDock XM a boom box, as it sounds much better than most other members of this classification. This unit is an outstanding sound system designed around either the Delphi XM Roady or Roady2, which are sold separately. XM radio provides over 130 channels for a monthly fee of $9.99, with commercial-free music as well as local traffic and weather for 21 markets (as of January 2005).
The PlayDock XM is a portable speaker system that runs on AC power, and it can also operate for up to ten hours using the built-in rechargeable batteries. Either source powers both the speakers and the Roady. This is one of the best-sounding portable satellite systems we've heard, with two full-range speakers that get a boost from a dedicated subwoofer. The system has a more substantial sound than might be expected, with an impressive 15-watt amplifier powering the 5-1/4-inch bass driver.
The PlayDock XM has a simple yet secure dock that connects the Roady to the system. It comes with a high-gain antenna with a 20-foot cord, so the PlayDock can be placed where it sounds best and the antenna located for optimal reception. XM's fixed satellites make it easy to get, and keep, the strongest signal. The Cambridge SoundWorks PlayDock XM is one of the best ways to enjoy an XM Roady or Roady2, in as many places as can be imagined.
