Cambridge Soundworks PlayDock MP3 boom box

Date Published: 5/10/06

The popularity of MP3 players is driving the proliferation of portable speaker systems, and one fine example is the Cambridge SoundWorks PlayDock MP3. Cambridge is a division of Creative, the company that makes the NOMAD and ZEN digital audio players. So it is no accident that the PlayDock works best with Creative players. Nevertheless, it is also versatile enough to use with other players, including Apple iPods.

The PlayDock MP3 is a roughly half-spherical cylinder that contains a three-speaker system. There is a pair of 2-1/2-inch main speakers (one for each channel) that handles low-mid to high-end frequencies, as well as a single 4-inch woofer that takes care of the low-end bass. A 6.9-watt amplifier drives each channel, while a single 15-watt amplifier powers the subwoofer.

The MP3 player attaches to the top of the PlayDock using one of four supplied flexible holders, which Cambridge calls gloves. The gloves are listed as specific to various Creative MP3 players. However, the gloves don?t provide a true docking-type connection, so any MP3 player that fits one of the gloves will work with the PlayDock.

The PlayDock MP3 provides very basic controls, with volume up and volume down buttons, a Wide button that extends the perceived sound stage, and a mute button. Two LEDs indicate operational modes. There are no remote capabilities. The PlayDock's rechargeable battery lasts 4 to 10 hours or more, depending on the MP3 player and the volume level used.

Sound quality is good, with a tendency toward strong mid-range bass performance and a clean-sounding high end. A weak deep bass response is about what you would expect from such a small woofer. Wide-mode performance is dependent on the material you are listening to, as well as the position of the PlayDock in the listening environment.

An unusual aspect of the PlayDock MP3 is its heft. It weighs in at 10 pounds, plus the weight of the player. The unusual weight comes from the use of a sealed rechargeable lead-acid battery, rather than the more typical throwaway alkalines. The extra weight makes the system sturdy, and the battery delivers longer play times.

Pro: Long battery life. Supports many different makes and models of MP3 players.
Con: Heavy. No true docking connector. Limited sound stage. No remote capabilities.
